The Earthshot Prize

Summary:

Incubated within The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales and launched by Prince William in 2020, The Earthshot Prize searches for extraordinary solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges. In July 2022, The Earthshot Prize was formally established as an independent charity to continue to deliver global change.

The Earthshot Prize uses a fair and rigorous process to search, select, accelerate, award and scale the best and most ingenious solutions to repair and regenerate our planet, while simultaneously nurturing eco-innovators and their impact.

The Prize selects and supports solutions in five areas, known as Earthshots:

  • Protect and restore nature
  • Clean our air
  • Revive our oceans
  • Build a waste-free world
  • Fix our climate

Under the Protect and Restore Nature area, the Earthshot Prize has established the following priorities for 2022/2023:

  1. Protecting and managing natural carbon sores such as peatlands and intact forests
  2. Restoring forests, wetlands and other damaged ecosystems
  3. Developing and scaling regenerative agriculture

In 2022, the Earthshot Prize Fellowship was launched in partnership with IDEO. This nine-month programme aims to help all Finalists supercharge their growth by unlocking new financial, networking and partnership opportunities.

Financing Instrument: Award, capacity-building

Project scale:  Each year over the course of this critical decade, five Winners will receive £1M each while all fifteen Finalists will benefit from tailored support to help scale their ground-breaking solutions.

Recipient countries/ regions/ country groups: Global

Eligibility Criteria:  The selection process prioritizes solutions that have moved beyond ideation, those that have working prototypes or proven effectiveness and those that are ready to be scaled at speed.

Application guidelines:
Each year, The Earthshot Prize works alongside a network of Nominators to launch a global search for innovative solutions to each of the five Earthshots. All nominations undergo a rigorous screening and assessment process before we select our five winners of The Earthshot Prize. Nominators seek out innovations and projects to nominate by making use of their environmental networks, through proactive searches, or by encouraging innovators with solutions to put their proposals to them directly. By browsing the data base of Official Nominators, applicants can find out about open calls for proposals.
